Thank you Chuck Barry

      Thank you Chuck Barry

Thank you, Chuck Barry for bringing us
Rock & Roll.
Before you came along, there was
Very little rhythm and soul;
I know a big band player was
What you wanted to be,
But your syncopated rhythm and your groovy back beat makes me so happy.

I remember mom and daddy,
Pillars of society.
Watching "I Love Lucy"
on our Dumont tabletop TV.
I'd stay in my room working
On that radio dial,
Trying to catch the air waves that
Pulsed to your magic style.

Juke Box I spun your records in the jukebox
Every chance that I could.

Feeding dimes and nickels for "Sweet 16" And "Johnny B. Goode."

Other kids dug Elvis and wore
low cut jeans to school,

But your flashy understatement was
Where Elvis learned to be cool.

Off in college we studied and
Worried about going to war.
Marched around in protests,
Running after foreign stars.
A lot of the kids thought an English accent's the test,
But singers like the "Stones" and "Beatles" knew who was really the best.

Roll over, Beethoven,
Chill it out, Copeland,
With a nod to Bob Dylan,
And I sure miss John Lennon.

The day I knew that the iron curtain was going to fall,
I was visiting Prague,
Going to a real hip ball.
Social Realism was a fading star on the scene,
All the boys and girls were bopping
To a Czech band playing
"Maybelline."

Thank you, Chuck Barry.

The other day we saw your band
Featured at the concert at the park.
You were bending those notes,
Bending your legs,
Hitting your mark.
Even little babies jumped and squealed to your electric guitar.
You've still got that magic touch,
That's what makes you a real star.

Thank you, Chuck Barry.
Thank you.
